Q. On Google maps, satellite view, there is a rounded shape within a ring of mountains. It seems like some sort of caldera but was surprised that I couldn't find anything on it on the web. It's very distinctive in a satellite view. Looks like it is about 1.5 miles north of Grants and a mile east of Milan.

A. What you see is the top of Black Mesa. It's named this because the rocks of the mesa are very dark in color. You can see this around the edges of the landform. The "mountains" you describe are actually the sides of the mesa. When viewed from the side (instead of straight down), you will see the slopes getting steeper and steeper toward the mesa, until at its edges there is a vertical cliff. Go into Google StreetView to see this (see the link below; Black Mesa is the raised area you see in the background; the link is the view of its western edge, near Milan). The top of the mesa, however, is extremely flat. The edge of the mesa, where it changes from flat, level ground to a vertical cliff straight down forms the "keyhole" pattern. This is the result of millions of years of erosion that just happens to have that shape today. The top of the mesa looks different because it is covered by a thin layer of light-colored sandy soil, unlike the dark rocks on its sides. Many of these dark rocks come from the same layer of dark colored rock that is at the top of the mesa immediately underneath the light-colored sandy soil. As the sides of the mesa eroded, rocks broke loose and fell onto the sides of the mesa, making all of it look dark.
