A. When it comes to Google, there is no shortcut to success. Here are some tips:

1. Update the blog frequently. A blog that is dormant for long periods will not appear among the first in Google's search results.

2. Each blog entry must have a title that contains keywords people would use to reach your blog through Google search. When you blog about something, imagine what kind of search keywords people would most probably use in Google to reach your site. So, if you are blogging something about compost, the word "compost" should appear somewhere in your blog entry title.

A site that receives many visitors (and which Google ranks highly) and that adds a link to your site will boost your blog's ranking more considerably than a link from a low ranking site. As in life, it pays to have your blog rub shoulders with high ranking, big shot sites.

4. Be generous with your links. Provide links in your blog entries to external sites such as for cross referencing or for further information regarding your blog entry. A blog that contains no or few external links is treated as a lone ranger and will not appear high in Google's search results.

5. Avoid tricks to boost your blog's ranking. Tricks include meaningless (or random) external links or keywords to try to deceive Google search engine into thinking that your blog contains a lot of information or topics. Also avoid paying for links, where people create many dummy sites and add links to your blog. Tricks such as these may work in the short term, but you will be caught eventually. Your blog will be banned by Google (meaning it won't appear at all on the search list) and that is akin to be branded a terrorist and thrown out of the country.

Building up your blog ranking takes hard work and time. Google has been refined to ensure this.

A. Tools > Clear Recent > Click the little down arrow to open up the tab > Make sure that Form History is checked.

You'll want to do Everything, if you want all of it gone.

Q. We've done quite a bit of renovations on our little farm and I'm curious when we'll get to see a change in the satellite view on Google Maps or Google Earth.

A. Google purchases the images from many different sources. Most of the images are purchased second hand - basically the images are not taken for the sole purpose of supplying them to Google. Most of the images are taken for completely different reasons and released to the public or sold to Google for extra profit.

Suggestion - your local government agency (county or city) should have a Geographic Information Sytems (GIS) department or division. They could be a great source of aerial photography.

I work for my local GIS division and we have images at 6" resolution taken in spring of 2008, 2007, 2006, 2003, 2001, and 1997.

Check with your local government - they will be the best source for updated imagery.

Why do deserts look dark and streaky in satellite images?

Q. just looked at the Sahara desert on google maps satellite image and the image looks as though someone has gone over it with a rake- lots of fine stripes heading east west and larger areas of colour giving the feeling of motion in an east-westerly direction. So what is this? Dunes? Sandstorms? But they cover the entire desert! And why do many of the streaks look so dark, almost black? I then looked at the Arabian desert- same thing. Then looked at Australian desert and it didn't seem to have this streaky pattern at all. So what is this?

A. I think it might be because of the direction in which the wind has blown the sand across the plains. the wind will also create Dunes which will create a change in direction of the streaks or a change in thickness.
They look dark due to the shadows created by the raised and less raised streaks of sand which have built up.

Q. When I look at downtown L.A. on the Google Maps satellite view, I see *a lot* of rooftops that have a number in a circle on them. The number is usually 10 but occasionally is 8 or 12. I've wondered if these are heliports, but it seems odd that there would be so many of them.

I thought that the numbers might simply be notations of some kind added by Google, but I don't see them on rooftops in other cities.

A. The circled numbers are on rooftop helipads. They define the weight limit of the pad.

I think a lot of the measurements might be too low from random entries I made. I'm not sure if they account for traffic and I live in a city.

Start by typing in your current location and then get directions to the next.. Once you have been given your route list/direction to destination, take a look at the bottom of the list to "check box" the "Use Clearflow to route based on traffic"..

This may give you the best idea of time with traffic at the current time...

To answer your question though, I'd say pretty accurate using posted speed limits on the various levels of streets and highways... But of course it's usually the best case, free of slow traffic...

If you use Google Voice, does it use your cell phone minutes?

Q. I keep hearing google advertising google voice as a way to get cheap calling, but how can this be, isn't it still using the cell phone towers from whatever service you have(AT&T/Verizon, etc?) Basically what I'm asking is if I switched to google voice could i then lower my calling plan to a very low amount of minutes and then not have to pay much for cell service or does it still use my cell's service?

A. At this time, Google Voice is a free service. But realize that it's mainly a phone forwarding service. Many are thinking that when it's said that Google Voice is free, that includes free calling on their cell phone plans, or that minutes are not charged on their cell phones, and that just isn't true. Your cell phone plans will continue to function just as they did without Google Voice. There are some ways around some of that with favorites lists, but that' dependent on the cell provider.

The main benefit I've seen personally is that now I can call my long distance relatives via my home phone by dialing through GV and that won't get charged as a long distance call. If I were to just dial directly with my home phone, I would be charged long distance. That also transfers the minute usage for that on my cell phone off of there, meaning I can move to a more economical prepaid cell phone if I choose. I don't do any international calling, but when I started, free calling had been limited to the continental US. I believe they've since opened up free calling to Canada (unfortunately, still not free to Alaska, Hawaii, or the US territories as far as I know).

A. what you require is to talk using the mic and hear using external speaker. Its very simple, just coonect your phone to external speaker (with 3 mm jack). Use normal mic of your phone.
So no need to connect computer, however it will do the same task.
I would still say to consider using voip apps like viber on your android mobile.

A. I believe those are crop fields that are irrigated by an arm that pivots around it's base in the middle, thus forming a circle. They are used in dry areas with little water access. I noticed that there a lot of them in certain areas of China too when I was looking at google Earth one day.

How do I import an iCal file to Google Calendar?

Q. So I exported my iCal file and it saves as a .ics file. When i go to Google Calendar, click the add - import calendar, then choose the location of where my ics file is, it tries to import but then an error messages shows up saying "Processed Zero Events" and nothing imports.

A. Sync ical with google calender:
1 Sign on to your Google Calendar account.

2 Click the down arrow next to the calendar you want to share on the left side of the browser window in the "My Calendars" box.

3 Select "Share this calendar."

4 Select the "Calendar Details" tab and scroll all the way down to Google Calendar's "Private Address" section.

5Click the green "iCal" button next to "Private Address" on the Google Calendar Details page.

6 Copy the URL (web address) on the pop-up window. This is your private calendar address and shouldn't be shared with anyone else since it shows all your events on Google Calendar.

7 Launch iCal in Mac OSX from your Dock.

8 Select "Calendar" from the top menu and click on the "Subscribe" option.

9 Paste (control-V) the URL you copied in Step 6 into the "Subscribe to:" field on the window that pops up.

10 Hit the "Subscribe" button.

11 Type in the name of the calendar in the "Name" field of the information window that pops up after you subscribed to your Google Calendar. You can also type in a description just below the "Name" field.

12 Click the check boxes next to "Alarms," "Attachments," and "To Do items" if you don't want to import those things from Google Calendar.

13 Select a time interval from the "Auto-refresh" drop-down box. This will tell iCal to refresh Google Calendar according to the time interval you selected.

14 Hit the "OK" button. Your Google Calendar is now listed underneath "Subscriptions" in the left pane of iCal's window.

A. You can't 'post' anything on Google. Google's main function is to search sites for keywords and images. So if you have a doodle that you would like people to be able to find using Google, put it on a website somewhere, make sure there is text on the page next to the image that says what it is, and then wait a few weeks. Eventually if you use Google image search and type in that text, Google will find your doodle.

A. The other answer above me is right- black is a common color in many breeds of horses, but there is no one breed called "Black". The Black Stallion was a series of children's books by author Walter Farley that came out in the 70's when I was in grammar school. The star of the series, the "Black" as he was called, was actually a dessert bred Arabian stallion, or an Arab-Thoroughbred cross of some type. The story goes that he was supposedly bred and raised in a wild herd in one of the trucial sheikdoms of Saudi Arabia, and he was owned by a Bedouin tribal chief. At some point, according to the story, he was stolen by thieves who put him on a ship bound for the US, where he met the main human character in the story- Alec Ramsay, who was a young man in his late teens when the series begins. The ship sinks when a fire breaks out aboard her, and Alec is saved only by being pulled clear of the wreckage by the "Black". The Black swims on through the night and eventually the pair end up on a deserted island in the South Atlantic, somewhere near the equator. During the weeks that follow, both boy/man and horse struggle to survive, and Alec gradually tames the stallion and is able to ride and work with him. Otherwise, your directions don't make much sense. And I drive throughout eastern PA, Delaware, NJ, and Maryland all the time. The toll on I-895 is $2, the toll on the I-95 at the DE/MD line is $5. No tolls crossing into NJ (only leaving NJ). And the toll on the NJ Turnpike is based on how far you go.

A. Cell phone numbers are not currently published. I think it should stay that way, personally. I think phone books are a huge waste of paper. When was the last time you even opened one when you can just do a quick google search? I haven't had a landline since about 2002 and I don't miss it at all.

A. In the hardware store paint section, they have spray paint just for appliances. If you have a really slick surface, you may want to sand it with a fine sandpaper first.If it is the textured one, then just spray light coats and let them dry good in between. If you try to cover it in one coat, you can get runs. If you get any runs......sand lightly and repaint that section.

What is a good Translator site besides Google Translator?

Q. Well, I have a few friends who speak different languages, and they don't mind at all when I send them stuff translated into their language. So lately, I have been using Google Translator, since that's the only site I know of, and I was trying to translate a sentence into Filipino.

I sent the sentence to my friend, and he told me that half the sentence was messed up. I was wondering is there are any very good Translator Sites out there besides Google Translator.

A. It's the only one. What you do is you grab the Filipino text and you put it back into the box and switch languages with the arrow thingy. Then you translate that back into English and you will see: if it gives you crap translation instead of what you typed, then you have to rephrase your English to make it hyper simple.

Ex: instead of "I hear you guys are getting along well" write "You and ____ are friends now, yes?" (Pay attention to the punctuation and use it wherever appropriate: without proper punctuation, meaning changes when translating!)

Because idioms or expressions just don't translate well in other languages so KISS (keep it simple silly!)

Otherwise there is babelfish.yahoo.com but that is 100 times worse than Google and it messes up a lot and there's also freetranslation.com but they changed the format and now it turns the same stuff as Babel.

Basically there are ONLY 2 free ones on the net: Babel & Google. If you google free translators and try the others you will ALWAYS get the same results as either babel or google.

So bottom line? Simplification here is your friend. There are many ways of saying something. Always think as if you were talking to someone very stupid when using translators, like people in 70's movies talking to Native American Indians. How!

Q. I think if people wanted the Google Translator to tell them they would look it up themself easily. Google Translator is hard to get an accurate translation unless you are familiar with the language already.

A. haha! I was just about to ask this question.

They think they are 'trying to help' when in fact they don't have a clue how inaccurate Google Translate is and are only just confusing the asker. Probably just doing it to get their 2 points - stupid really, I don't see the point in answering if they don't even know the answer.
