How do you care for a Spider Turtle?
Q. I'm considering getting a turtle, but we're having no luck finding people that sell them, finally we found a store in the phonebook that sells Spider turtles. Are they purely aquatic? Or can you take them out to sunbathe and such? because I hear Sunbathing in the real sunlight is good for turtles, and I would like to be able to take it out once and awhile, of course with proper cleaning and such. Can anyone give me some info?

A. No they are not aquatic and they are not turtles they are tortoises. You really should do a lot of research. Google Spider Tortoise and Spider Tortoise care sheets. Here is one to get you started. http://www.tortoisetrust.org/care/pyxis.html

You will need a large enclosure. Outdoors and escape and predator proof is best depending on where you live. If you keep him indoors you will also need a large enclosure. You will also need a heat lamp and a UVA/UVB bulb that emits at least 5% UVB. If the box doesn't say UVB it doesn't have it.

I also would not purchase from a petstore you need to search and find a reputable breeder. We have reputable breeders on 2 forums I am on. They should be able to help you find a reputable Spider tortoise breeder. You could also check out reptile shows.

The forums are http://www.turtleexchange.com/forum/ and
