Is there a website that shows satellite imagery and zooms in really close?

Q. I have been to google maps but i want something that can really zoom in close to a location. Is there any websites that can do this?

A. There is one call Window Live Local. It has a feature called bird eye view. It switches the view from the Satellite picture to one taken with aerial photography and you can change the angle of viewing. It's not available for all areas.

http://local.live.com/

How often are the Google Maps satellite images updated?
Q. We've done quite a bit of renovations on our little farm and I'm curious when we'll get to see a change in the satellite view on Google Maps or Google Earth.

A. Google purchases the images from many different sources. Most of the images are purchased second hand - basically the images are not taken for the sole purpose of supplying them to Google. Most of the images are taken for completely different reasons and released to the public or sold to Google for extra profit.

Suggestion - your local government agency (county or city) should have a Geographic Information Sytems (GIS) department or division. They could be a great source of aerial photography.

I work for my local GIS division and we have images at 6" resolution taken in spring of 2008, 2007, 2006, 2003, 2001, and 1997.

Check with your local government - they will be the best source for updated imagery.

How do you take labels off google maps?
Q. So I'm an architecture student, and Im trying to find a aerial view of Amsterdam that shows the roads but has no labels on them. Is this possible with google earth or google maps? Does anyone know of a autocad or rhino file that has this?

A. In Google Earth - Look in the LAYERS panel on the left.

UNCHECK the PRIMARY DATABASE. All lines, labels will be switched off.

Within the PRIMARY DATABASE - you can selectively switch on and off between boundaries, town names, etc also.

In Google Maps : On the right side is an icon of the world. Hover over it. A dropdown will indicate LABELS. Switch that off.

Hope that helps

Is there an online archive of old aerial photos similar to Google Maps?

Q. Google Maps and similar services are very interesting and useful for seeing how things look now, or just about now, but are there any similar ways to look at the Earth at some specific past date (or the photo dated closest it)?

A. You could try terraserver.com. And I just read your answer on that "Do you believe in God?" Question, and im not to level 2 yet but if I was Id have definitely given your answer a thumbs up. People who ask questions like that are ignorant and gullible.

Is there a place to see live Satelite map images for free?
Q. I know google satelite map has real images, but those are just pictures, is there a place to go and see live video? Or to be able to take a photo of your land?

A. The closest to live images are the GEOS weather satellite images, available from a number of sites. These are very low resolution. High resolution satellite imagery is available only to the military and intelligence services, as the ability to zoom in on a particular area requires the satellite's orbit be altered, a very expensive proposition.

Sources like Google Earth use images from many sources, primarily aerial photography (from airplanes rather than satellites). Higher resolution imagery is sometimes available on a local basis. For example, Simcoe County, in which I live, has an interactive mapping service online, which uses relatively up-to-date (April 2008) colour aerial photographs of the entire county. This is far more detailed and up-to-date than images of the same area in Google Earth. In fact the image of my area there must be at least 20 years old, based on what can be seen of highway construction.

Can google maps be wrong about what direction north is?
Q. Google earth shows that my house is facing south, but my father says that can't be true.

A. Well, the Google Earth images are compiled from satellite and aerial images which are then stitched together. Let's say they made a mistake and your house was rotated 45 degrees, then everything else in that image would be rotated 45 degrees - other buildings would be shown in the wrong places, roads would run in the wrong directions and not join up where they should. All in all, I'd say it is unlikely.

There is one very easy way to find out - if the sun is shining directly on the front of your house at noon then your house faces south.

A. Your best bet is the USGS. I'm sure they have them but they may not be free.

Click on the link for their aerial photos.

What was Google Street View actually created for?
Q. I mainly look at it out of curiousity, to explore, and, ahem, "stalk", if you will.

But what constructive/meaningful purpose is it for? I mean, traditional aerial maps are good enough to find places.

A. It almost seems like it's for sheer entertainment value, but the expense of having all those trucks driving around photographing every inch of street doesn't seem like it would justify it. It can help with identification. You're trying to find an address that you only know by sight. It can also help find an address after getting directions, because you know what to look for.

I thought I'd look for a source, and the first one I found agrees with me, although the reasons are in reverse order of what I said.

1. It revolutionizes how people use maps.
2. You can find places you've been but don't remember the names of.
3. You can see places that you're never going to go.

Google is amazing. I personally think their search engine is still their "killer app", but they just keeping looking for one, don't they?

A. its a good way to check out a house your about to buy or something like that....
i usually use it for when i have a meeting or interview to go to, and i need to check out the best way to get there with out any dramas(traffic).
you can see road signs telling you no right turn or whatever, when you do need to make a right turn into that street, so you can look around for another way.
you can not tell that on melways......

How do Google Maps calculate the distance between point a and point b - where do they get their data from?
Q. Just wondering how do you know that when they say it's 25km (or miles) from city x to city z that that's correct? Thanks.
But where do they get these longitudinal and latitude positions from?

A. From a geodatabase created by GIS technicians. My master's thesis research was the creation of s a geological geodatabase for the Eastern Wichita Mountains in central southwest Oklahoma. I started with raw thematic mapper digital image . I used two software packages , ERDAS 7.5 and ERDAS Imagine 8.0 and versions, ESRI ArcView 3.2 and #.3, and ArcInfo 7.2. What A GIS technician does is take a digital aerial or satellite image, rectify the digital image to a map or another image that has already been rectified to map coordinates, and creates a table that ties the longitude and latitude coordinates of an area to a particular classification, like a soil type, a rock formation, vegetation type, population , religious affiliation, political party affiliation, whatever. Geographical coordinates are associated with different categories in a DIGITAL database. . When you draw a line on Google Map or Google Earth, the software is connecting to that digital database and is calculating the distance with computer program as you draw the line.

Need a place where I can get high resolution aerial photographs?
Q. Want to frame a photo of 50 acres. Google earth, mapquest, yahoo maps, terraserver.com do not offer the resolution I need. Any suggestions other that hiring a local service? Is there a government in each county that keeps photos on file?

A. Sounds crazy, but try low altitude aerial photography using remote controlled helicopter. It's very reasonable and is quite a neat thing to watch!

Ask someone on this forum if they are in the area. Put your city and state. I can almost guarantee you'll find someone local who can do this for you.

What web site will have the most up dated aerial maps of earth?
Q. I am looking for a web site that has up to date aerial photo of the land where I live. Where I live it is showing a photo that is several years old.

A. get google earth,
they have low cost subscription,
