Q. Hi, I'm using the Google AdWorks program to advertise my company, but I'm really confused with the system.

My questions are:

Â·What is an impression? I've read every explanation but I still don't get it.

Ok, so thanks to rockstar who answered me perfectly, but what are the "negative keywords"?

A. Ok, simple answer:

- "What is an impression?" A: When someone types in your keyword in google, your ad will display in the sponsored links box. Each time this happens for every person, it is called an impression. An impression is just a way to count the number of times your ad is shown to someone. So if your ad has been shown 50,000 times, you have 50,000 impressions.

- "Is there any difference in the performance if my keyword is written in capital letters?" A: No. Your keyword should be written normally, however, to keep from turning away some audiences, but for the most part, it will not affect performance.

- "Â·I don't understand the payment thing: do they charge you by impression? Or by click? Or both? A: Google charges you for each time a unique person legitimately CLICKS on an ad, and this resets after a certain time period. Google has ways of determining click fraud, so you will not be charged because someone sits there and clicks on your ad from different browsers.

UPDATE - Negative keywords are words that people search for that you DON'T want to bring them to your site.

For example, our site sells security cameras. The word "cctv cameras" is a regular keyword, and the word "voyeur" becomes a Negative keyword, because I don't want someone to search for "voyeur cctv cameras" to come to our site, because I don't want illegal or porn traffic on my site. So my negative keywords become things like "sex", "porn", "voyeur", etc.

This is difficult area to master, because you have to do a lot of research and spend a lot of time thinking about it to find all your negative keywords. Some people don't care what kind of traffic they get, so they don't need negative keywords.

Here is another, very useful example: Say you have a site that sells parts for Toyota engines. So, a good keyword might be "engine parts". That will bring a lot of traffic to your site. A negative keyword for that site would be "Nissan", because you don't want people to search for "Nissan engine parts" and end up on your site, since you sell Toyota, not Nissan.

A. In order to get a live satellite picture, you would need access to a satellite. I don't think any exist that give random people access to locations around the world, and you'd have to work with the images given to you from Google Earth. I imagine they're updated from time to time, but I don't know how often.

A. You need to dial using Google Voice app. Only then will your Google Voice number shows instead of your cell number.

Why does Google Voice sometimes give a busy signal after ringing?

A. To install Chrome you need an active internet connection, so you may make your way easier by downloading Firefox or another installer that provides the full package and try with it. Once installed, if it can't access either, then you have to check the security features of the system.

Where can i rent a valve locator near San Francisco?

We are trying to find some water valves on our sports field. WE have a few puddles on the field, but can't seem to visually find the leaking valve boxes to get those fixed. A. Call for utility locates because you are digging out there. Meet the locator guy out there to show him a spot where you will be digging a hole. Ask him if he will also locate your water line for an extra $50. Most of them are contractors and will do it for cash. I assume its the irrigation system so if you have a wire he can hook to, it will go fast for him and he wont complain. You will have to follow his marks and find the valves your looking for because he wont chances are be able to locate just the valve but the whole run. You can also use witching sticks if all else fails. Look it up on google. I use 2 of the flag wires they put in and tear the flags off. Place bends in for your fingers and hold about 8 inches apart and walk the line they will cross when you pass over it.

How to translate an entire web page on Google translate service?

Q. A paragraph can be translated on Google translate and they also had the facility of translating a whole web page but these days I've noticed that when a url is pasted on the appropriate place to translate it doesn't do anything but says again that paste url for translation.

A. Step 1
First, try the Google Translation service. You can visit http://translate.google.com and enter any block of text into the box to have it translated into another language. The default setting is from Spanish to English, but if you click on the buttons you will find drop-down menus that allow you to choose different "to" and "from" languages. If you want to translate an entire web page, just enter the URL (by copying it from your address bar) into the appropriate section and then clicking on the "translate" button.

How to make a translator like Google Translate?

Q. Hi there, I am wanting to make a translator like Google Translate. I have made up my own language and I want to show my friends my language and what it means in english and such. I don't know much about coding and stuff. Please Help!

A. Google Translate is derived from a statistical approach, and uses modern database technology.

First, study statistics. All the stat you can learn. Everything. Get a PhD in the stuff. No sense trying to re-invent 120 years of mathematics that's already been figured out.

Second, check out the approach used by Systran's method for translation that's been used for about 30 or more years. It's an interesting study, and in retrospect it shows you why progress in translation has been so damned slow until Google.

Third, learn database. Get a job at Google (not too hard if you have that PhD in statistics) and work on the language translation team.

As for your own invented language, it wouldn't hurt if you also learned maybe half a dozen other languages. Hint: Don't try to learn Spanish and Italian at the same time. The live in the same room in your brain and will fight with each other.

Why is it that google translate is so terrible?

Q. I've been teaching myself German and learned through trial and error that most online translators are not to be trusted; but I've run into the most trouble with google translate.
It doesn't seem to register the right wording order with most languages, and when I go to check myself I've got nothing to do but wait for my Austrian friend to come online to correct me.

A. When people use a calculator to work out the answer to a mathematics problem, they will get one, correct answer if they have keyed in all the digits and operators correctly. They then go to an online translator and expect to be able to do the same with a piece of text. Mathematics has its own logic and rules that can be recreated with a calculator. Language doesn't. Languages are constantly changing anyway through usage and sentence grammar and syntax vary widely from language to language. The online translator is only as good as the algorithms it deploys when rendering meaning from one language to another. And this is one area in which a machine still can't compete with an appropriately trained human translator.

The best human translators are often those brought up bilingually, by say, a German-speaking father and an English-speaking mother. To be a good translator, you have to know two languages to a native level. In many Yahoo questions, non-bilingual German speakers sometimes post answers translating German text into English, putting "native" (native what?) as their source. Their knowledge of German may be impeccable, but their English will sometimes sound stilted and unidiomatic even if, technically, the grammar is accurate. If you're not bilingual, then it's best to stick to translating into your mother tongue because you know that language best. The United Nations Organisation tends to employ only completely bilingual linguists, which of course is an accident of birth.

Getting back to online translators, they do have their uses. Use them to translate text from a foreign language into English and read through what they produce with a critical eye. If you enter a whole text and end up with gibberish, enter a sentence or two of the text instead and see what happens. If you're still unsatisfied, then enter the text one word at a time. You'll get the gist of the meaning that way, but to get a wholly reliable translation, you'll need to approach a professional translator. If you must translate from your mother tongue into a foreign language, you must always re-enter the foreign language text into the online translator and get it to translate back into your mother tongue. Then judge whether the translator has done a good job.

Finally, the best help to the linguist isn't Google Translate but Google itself. If you want to check the grammatical accuracy of a piece of foreign language text, do an online search and see if the phrase comes up on a website in the country where the foreign language is spoken. If you do find it there, check what kind of website it is, whether a teenage, slang-oriented site or an academic site where people use formal language.

A. 1. To use Google Maps, first you have to either SIGN UP or SIGN IN with your email
address and a password.
2. Click the box in top, right-hand corner to enable either a plain, or a satellite map.
3. Move around the map and zoom in to where you want to put the placemark.
4. At top left, click the box labelled "My places".

A. The area will be safe for you to walk. You can even take the 19 Polk bus if you want to, fare is $2 per person. There are sidewalks on either side of the street so you will have pedestrian access though they may be working on curbs or sidewalks, I don't know simply because I've not walked that route in the last few months.

Q. Does anyone know how are you able to see the closest intersection when you google an address. Is it all done by satellite? Or are there thousands of people riding around taking pictures of intersections? (Just kidding of course). A. Go to People Finder under Google. Try, in several different sites, by entering the name and address. Sometimes you'll get a hit with a lot of information. Don't go to the pay areas on these sites unless it's really important. There are other ways.

If the above doesn't work, find the house number of his neighbor by looking up the address on Google. You can also go to city tax records (public documents also often on line).

Then type in the house number and street of the neighbor in one of the people finder's sites. You might get a hit on People Finder. Have a friend call the neighbor and ask for the name you want, slightly off. If your friend is smooth talker, he or she will be able to say, oh--do you know the number of _________. I thought this was it. You have to have an innocent reason prepared for why you want the number. You have a book or an Ipod that you think belongs to him--you can't read the name clearly, etc. and want to know when it would be OK to deliver it, etc.

Ask a friend for the number, or, more deviously, ask one of your friends to ask the friend for a number.

If his father is a professional man (lawyer or doctor) often directories of these folks list both home and business addresses and numbers.

A. Never tried it before but I know its done with amazon. If you're getting a g1 coming from a iphone be prepared for the difference. While the g1 is a nice phone tmobile is very behind in phone technology so the g1 isn't as good as an iphone and the apps are wack and useless. Not all of course some are good but... well... you'll see.

A. Well, you probably have to reset the phone back to the factory settings. When you first activate an Android phone, it requires you to sign into the device with a Google mail account. (If you don't have one, go on line and sign up for one...it's free). The phone will then sync all your email, contacts and calendar entries from your Google account to the phone automatically.

Sounds to me like the previous owner neglected to reset the phone.

In the settings, there's a place where you can reset the phone to the factory settings.

Menu > Settings > Security > Factory data reset > Reset phone > Erase everything

A. If you've only been around a week or so, perhaps Google simply hasn't crawled through your site yet. I've had sites that took up to 3 weeks to get picked up by Google's spiders.

A. Right now, the Nexus one is available for 179 for only NEW people on Tmobile, not existing customers even with upgrades. If you're an existing customer, it costs 279. That might be the same for Verizon. Also, on TMobile, you can't buy the nexus one from their website or store, you have to buy it through google.com/phone, which will also probably be the same with Verizon, so your $100 discount won't work. I'd go with the droid. if you're eligible for New Every Two, you can get the droid for $149.99 and the Nexus one is only a little bit faster, which the droid is already incredibly fast. Go with the Droid!
